MEDERIC TURAY – A glimpse into the world of the artist

Born in 1979 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, my artistic journey spans continents and cultures. Now based in Marrakech, Morocco, my art reflects the diverse influences that have shaped my life. Graduating from the Abidjan School of Fine Arts, I challenge societal norms with my concept of « human with a capital H, » transcending racial, geographic, and socio-political stereotypes. Descended from the noble Akan people, I honor my heritage through motifs like ancestral masks and spiritual symbols. My work serves as a bridge between past and present, inviting viewers to explore the universal human experience through the lens of identity and culture.

Influences and background

Growing up in the United States during the vibrant cultural scene of the 1990s, I was immersed in hip hop music, graphic novels, and the groundbreaking works of artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Basquiat. As an adult, I returned to the Ivory Coast to pursue my art education and embarked on extensive travels across Africa.

Themes and symbolism of Art

In my art, I delve into themes of balance and duality, symbolized by the cross and spiral. These symbols represent the intricate interplay of forces within the cosmos and the essence of creative fertility. Drawing from my Akan heritage, I incorporate motifs such as ancestral masks and spiritual symbols, infusing my work with layers of meaning and cultural resonance.

Artistic techniques and materials

My artistic journey is characterized by bold experimentation with materials and techniques. From coarse coffee grinds to sumptuous oil and acrylic brushstrokes, I explore a myriad of mediums to create a sensory-rich experience for the viewer. My mastery of art history, humanities, and nomadic experiences informs every brushstroke, adding depth to my creations.

Philosophical reflections

Through my art, I document my personal quest for truth and meaning in a rapidly changing world. I challenge conventional narratives , advocating for a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of humanity. Themes of resistance and identity are central to my exploration of the human experience, inviting viewers to engage in profound reflections alongside me.
